Pakistan Sailing History⛵
Sailing is a technical skill to control a vessel or ship for the voyage by its sails. Before the invention of the engine, all marine transports were depended on sails, after it becomes part of recreation and water sports. Sailing also is known as yachting, which is particularly described for club and sports base sailing activities. Now it is a sign of peace and healthy activities of coastal cities. Luckily Pakistan has a natural and pleasant coastal belt of the Arabian Sea. The history of sails vessels here, for transportation and sports purpose, is very old and bright.
Very little known of the early days of yacht racing in Karachi Pakistan Harbor but in the “Daily Gazette” of 22nd June 1880 there is a notice that “the windy weather we have had lately has made our harbor rather unpleasant for boating”
The first yachting club here in Karachi was founded in 1911, named by Karachi Yacht Club, originally known as the Karachi Sailing Club. The prime mover in the formation of the club was the late Mr. Punnett of the Customs Service, the club’s first Commodore. The Club premises, originally situated at Manora island, came into existence in 1912 on land in possession of the Indo-European Telegraph Company whose pier the Club used and whose cable ship “the Patrick Stewart” was moored close by. To the Club building, a large extension was made in 1925, and quarters for Tindals were provided in 1930.
Although no Club existed until 1911, there was sailing going on as a sport for many years in Karachi prior to that date. The Karachi Boat Club records the sailing of small boats in the creeks in 1885 but the sport was never developed by that club. In the time of British Government, Western Command in Karachi, serving the club efficiently with which were several keen yachtsmen, made 1938 very active in the Club. There were 17 Tomtits and 18 Dinghies and on one occasion at least, every boat turned out to race. A very fine Cup was presented by the officers of the Western Command.
In 1969 the government of Pakistan granted official status to Pakistan Sailing Federation (PSAF) formerly the Pakistan Yachting Association (PYA), which all of the credit for sailing achievements and efforts of legend Yachtsmen.
In 1973 Cadet Class of membership was introduced with the collaboration of the Pakistan Naval Academy. In 1975, the club sent a team privately to Colombo to compete in the 5th Southern Asian Yachting Regatta. During 1975/1976 the Enterprise boat was introduced to the Club. Subsequently, this class of boats has become very popular and the club members today own a large number of this class of boats.
In September 1978 the club organized a very successful 7th Southern Asian Yachting Regatta in Karachi in which teams from India, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, Singapore, Dubai, and Pakistan took part. This was the first international Yachting Regatta in Pakistan and became instrumental in promoting Yachting as a sport in the country.
In November 1978 Members of the club participated in the VIII Asian games held in Pattaya, Thailand, in which Byram Avari with Lt. Munir Sadiq of Pakistan Navy won the first Yachting Gold medal for Pakistan. This was an outstanding performance considering strong opposition from India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and others. For this achievement, both were awarded the "Pride of Performance" certificate by the President of Pakistan.
In the years Pakistan yachting has gained a great deal of popularity in the country and the competence of our sailors is as good as any in the world today. Another encouraging sign is the interest being shown by the young members and the club is proud that in the Asian Regatta in Bombay in 1981 a bronze medal was won in a junior competition. In the 9th Asian games held in Bombay in November 1982, Pakistan sent teams to participate in Enterprise, O.K., Fireball, and Wind glider events.
Byram Avari with his wife Goshpi Avari was once again outstanding and won a gold medal for the second time running in the Enterprise-class of boats. Captain Khalid Akhtar of the Pakistan Navy also showed excellence in sailing the O.K. class of boats and also won a gold medal.
A new Enterprise pair of water-oriented naval officers Munir Sadiq and Mohammad Zakaullah (later on Chief of Naval Staff) emerged on the horizon and kept the country’s flag high at the Seoul Asian Games in 1986 and Beijing Asian Games in 1990. For this achievement, Zakaullah was awarded the "Pride of Performance" certificate by the President of Pakistan. https://www.facebook.com/AdmiralZakaullah.PakistanNavy
In1990 Pakistan’s supremacy surprisingly came to a halt when Munir sailing with his younger brother Mamoon, also a naval officer was relegated to a silver medal at Hiroshima.
However, the good thing that occurred in the Japanese city was that the efforts of former PSAF secretary, Capt (retd) A. R. Arshad finally bore fruitful results when Pakistan captured another medal, a bronze, in Optimist class meant for U-15 boys and girls.
The Munir Sadiq TI (M) & Mamoon Sadiq TI (M) pair for the second time had to be content with a silver medal at the Bangkok Asian Games four years later. At the same games, naval officer Zahid Rauf TI (M) also did the country proud when he captured a bronze in the Super Moth class. Thus it became the fourth boat after Enterprise, OK Dinghy, and Optimist in which Pakistan excelled by finishing on the podium at the Asian level. For these achievements, Mamoon Sadiq and Zahid Rauf were awarded the "Pride of Performance" certificate by the President of Pakistan.
Pakistan grabbed their third silver in Enterprise this time through the pair of Shehryar Arshad and Mohammad Riaz in the last Asian Games at Busan, South Korea. Shehryar was also awarded the "Pride of Performance" certificate by the President of Pakistan. Later on, South Asian Sailing Regatta held in 2005 hosted by Pakistan Sailing Federation, CAS International Sailing Regatta held in 2008 hosted by Pakistan Air Force at PAF yacht club Korangi Creek Karachi. Pakistani yachtsmen proved excellent performance as well as admirable hospitality.
World Military Sailing Championship (CISM) held in 2016 hosted by Pakistan Navy at Karachi. The events were successfully conducted; many Asian, European including Russian teams participated. The first time in World Military Sailing Championship, Pakistan won the Silver medal, the team was consisting of Najeeb Ullah Khan, Qasim Abbas, Khalid Hussain, Rehman Ullah, and Tariq Ali.
Naval Officer Captain Abdur Rahman Arshad also the legend of Pakistan Sailing. His entire efforts to manage the sailing activities at one platform; conducting big sailing events at the country and international level, searching for new talent, and its promotion at the international level are the main achievements. He has served PSAF as Secretary-General. Presently he is an International Race Officer, member of the “K” group of World Sailing, Vice president of the Asian Sailing Association, the founder and President of the Pakistan Youth Sailing Association (PYSA) which is running many youth sailing training programs with the collaboration of the Pakistan Air Force Yacht Club (PAFYC) at Karachi. https://www.facebook.com/abdur.r.arshad
Presently the secretary-general of Pakistan Sailing Federation Cdr Muhammad Akram Tariq is very committed to the promotion of Sailing and its glorious position back. He is an expert yachtsman who has performed excellent performance in many national and international events. Establishing new sailing clubs and venues countrywide is a great achievement to hunt new talent and promotion. Now Sailing events are conducting not only in Karachi, as well as in Islamabad and Balochistan. https://www.facebook.com/akram.tariq.58
A little but vibrant name in sailing is Tofique Ahmad TK (M), famously known as Mian Tofique Ahmad is the real spirit behind the success of media awareness of Pakistan's sailing under the guidance of the Pakistan Sailing Federation. This young sailor of laser class is making entire efforts for publications of sailing events and promotional aspects through social and electronic media. For his extraordinary services, Tofique was awarded the "Tamgha-i-Khidmat" medal by the President of Pakistan.
